Black and White All Over Again
From elegant and classy, to fab and funky, black and white is making a comeback as the primary décor color for special events, weddings and corporate parties. Its bold and patterned use is showing up everywhere - from the cover of January’s “Vanity Fair,” featuring actress Katherine Heigl and pop art expressionism, to the fashion runways of Gucci and Prada and even the interior design work of Jonathon Adler. The Special Event industry has taken note, and is forging new paths using black and white in décor elements everywhere.
Black and white is often used to color block a room and generate order and flow, and is now catching attention by moving to the forefront of tabletops. Black brings a level of sleek sophistication to event spaces and contemporary room décor. It is elegant, and dominant, and looks great when paired with white, and used as an accent. White implies purity, spaciousness and virtue, complementing black to create balance and help carry the eye from one side of the room to the other.
The basic and classic combination of black and white has been transformed. Polkadots, paisleys and floral motifs are adorning the tables and chairs at elegant affairs, and are being embroidered on silks and sewn onto satins. Retro-futuristic, geometric or animal print, black and white brings sexy and pure together making it genuinely evocative.
For a lush and fresh alternative, add accent color in grass green, raspberry red and various shades of pink. For enhanced themed events, incorporate dark jewel tones and metallics or chic jewel encrusted overlays. Linens in contrast colors, such as bright red, bright pink, emerald green or a hint of gold can also provide excellent highlights. Though it may look simple, the spectacular combination lends a very elegant look. When used in event décor, the combination can make for the simplest, yet most striking statements.
